BALTIMORE (April 11, 2005) – U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers this week intercepted a package containing a prescription medication from Pfizer Inc., which could help stop a potentially fatal drug overdose. The medication is the brand-name version of Viagra (sildenafil) which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. The FDA issued a warning against the drug in 2010, but Pfizer has been working on a generic version of the drug, which is sold under the brand name Viagra. When the package arrived at the Cincinnati, Ohio, pharmacy, the medication had not been approved by the FDA for sale, and the FDA determined it was potentially dangerous. The package contained the drug’s active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, which can have a dangerous interaction with nitrates found in some medications used to treat angina, high blood pressure and heart failure. The FDA also ordered a health care provider to report any adverse reactions to the agency’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program. In addition, the package also contained three boxes containing four tablets of the drug, each containing 10 tablets of sildenafil citrate and one box containing four tablets of Viagra. The pills were labeled “Viagra for ED” and “Viagra to treat ED”.
The contents of the prescription bottle were not included in the package’s package. While Pfizer has not received a court order for the shipment of the drug, the FDA has authorized CBP officers and their personnel to seize pharmaceuticals from packages and mail packages containing pharmaceuticals that were not approved for sale by the agency. The FDA has also required all prescription medications for sale to the FDA for review and to return the medications to the agency for disposal. The man, who asked to be identified as John, told police his prescription was for the blue pills, but not the pills for men. He was told he could not go to a doctor, so he decided to take a pill instead, a blue Viagra pill.
The man then got into the back of a vehicle and drove away. Police said they believe he was involved in the accident. The man told police he did not have a prescription for the blue pill, and he did not want to take it. The man was released on $200,000 bond and has not been charged.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was released from jail last month.
He was arrested and charged with a crime. He faces up to 20 years in prison for a crime he was not involved in.
